Why Is My Car Shaking After It Snows? ❄️🚗

If you’ve ever headed out after a NH snowstorm and suddenly felt your car shaking, vibrating, or wobbling, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common winter issues we see — and fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest to fix.

The Most Likely Cause: Snow Packed Inside Your Wheels

When snow and slush build up inside your wheel, it can freeze into a solid chunk. That extra weight throws the wheel out of balance, causing the whole car to shake — especially once you reach 30–50 mph.

It feels like something is seriously wrong, but usually… it’s just snow.

Signs the vibration is caused by snow in the wheels:

  • The shaking started right after a snowstorm

  • The vibration changes as your speed changes

  • You hear a light “thumping” sound at lower speeds

  • The shaking gets better after the car warms up or after a long drive

How to Fix It

You can usually stop the vibration by removing the snow and ice from inside the wheels:

  1. Park safely.

  2. Check the inside of each wheel.

  3. Knock out any packed snow or ice (carefully).

  4. A quick wash also helps melt anything stuck behind the spokes as long as temperatures are above freezing.

Once the wheels are clear, your car should drive smoothly again.

When It’s Not the Snow

If the shaking doesn’t go away after cleaning the wheels, it could be:
