2021 Audi Q5 — 48K-Mile Service with Walnut Blast Carbon Cleaning

Kathy has been bringing her Audis to us for years — this is actually her second Q5 we've serviced. When her 2021 Q5 hit 48,000 miles, it was time for some important maintenance that a lot of Audi owners don't hear about from the dealership.

Here's everything we did during this visit and why each service matters for keeping this Q5 running the way Audi designed it.

Oil Change with Castrol

We perform oil changes on every Audi at 5,000-mile intervals — not the 10,000 miles that the dealer recommends. The 2.0T engine in the Q5 runs a turbocharger that puts serious demands on the oil, and by 10,000 miles, that oil has lost a significant amount of its protective properties. Shorter intervals with Castrol full synthetic keep the turbo and internals protected the way they should be.

Every oil change at Reflex also includes a complimentary digital inspection — photos and video of your vehicle's condition sent directly to your phone so you can see exactly what we see.

Water Pump Replacement

At 48,000 miles, the water pump on the 2.0T is one of the most common replacement items we see. They tend to leak because the thermostat housing is plastic. The housing and waterpump bolt to one another as a single unit.

The timing of this replacement also created an opportunity for the next service on the list.

Walnut Blast Carbon Cleaning

This is one of the most important services for any direct injection Audi or VW engine, and it's one most owners have never heard of.

Direct injection engines spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber instead of over the intake valves. That means the intake valves don't get washed with fuel the way older engines did — so carbon deposits build up on the valve surfaces over time. The result is reduced airflow, rough idle, misfires, and lost power.

The fix is walnut blast cleaning — we blast finely crushed walnut shell media through the intake ports to strip the carbon deposits off the valves without damaging anything.

Because we were already replacing the water pump, much of the disassembly work overlapped — which made this the perfect time to do the carbon cleaning and save Kathy on labor. This is why we always recommend combining these services when the timing lines up.

If your Audi or VW has a direct injection engine and over 40,000 miles, give us a call to find out if a walnut blast cleaning is due. You'll feel the difference.

Cabin Air Filter

We recommend replacing cabin and engine air filters every 20,000 miles or 18 months — whichever comes first. Kathy's cabin air filter only had about 10,000 miles on it, but it had been in there long enough to be due by time.

This cabin air filter only had 10,000 miles on it — but after a full cycle of New Hampshire seasons, the pollen, dust, and road grit speak for themselves.

Even if the mileage looks low, time and New Hampshire weather do the work. If your filter looks anything like this, it's past due.

Tire Rotation, Balance & Alignment

We rotated and balanced all four tires and performed a full wheel alignment to make sure everything is wearing evenly. On an AWD vehicle like the Q5, even tire wear is critical — uneven wear can stress the Quattro system and lead to problems down the road.

We recommend rotation every 5,000 miles (we do it with every oil change) and a balance and alignment every 15,000 miles or 12 months.
