Annett brought her 2020 Audi Q5 Premium in for general service at our shop here in Hooksett, NH. During the inspection, we found something that’s really common on these B9-chassis Audis — and if you ignore it, it can turn into a much bigger problem.
Deteriorated Rear Spring Pad on 2020 Audi Q5
See that red spring pad? The passenger side rear lower spring pad was deteriorated. These pads sit between the coil spring and the spring perch, and their job is to keep the spring seated properly and isolated from the metal surface underneath.
When these pads break down, a couple of bad things can happen. The spring can actually walk off its seat — which is exactly as sketchy as it sounds. Or corrosion builds up and causes the spring to become coil-bound, which can lead to the lower part of the spring snapping. Either way, you’re looking at a suspension failure that could’ve been prevented. We always replace these in pairs because if one side is gone, the other isn’t far behind.
New Rear Lower Spring Pads Installed
Here’s a look at the new spring pads going in. Fresh pads, clean surfaces, everything seated correctly. This is one of those repairs where the parts themselves are simple, but knowing to look for them is the key. A lot of shops don’t even check these during routine maintenance.

Both sides done. This is the kind of thing we catch all the time on B9-platform Audis — Q5s, A4s, A5s. We see cars from Hooksett, Manchester, Concord, and all over southern NH with this same issue. It’s one of those Audi-specific wear items that an independent specialist is going to be familiar with.
